Fault Diagnostics

We have built up an enviable reputation for fault finding and problem solving, and are often used by main dealers to fix troublesome bikes.

Human Knowledge and Diagnostic Analysis

Our Dyno facility is a great tool for setting air/fuel ratios, but it cannot replace human diagnosis of component failure in basic fuel injection systems.

ECU’s can store ‘ghost errors’ caused by faulty batteries, wiring errors, magnetic pickups not being seen, or simply switching the bikes on and off.

We go way beyond plugging in a ‘box of tricks’ to find problems. Diagnostic tools do not tell you what is at fault, so you have to know your parameters – ambient air pressure and air temperature, coolant temperature, TPS reset? Is it linear or mechanical adjustment, coolant temperature sensors etc.

Once all the parameters are OK, what about dynamic compression and belt tension or throttle body synchronisation, injector flow & impedance, idle CO2 valve, hydrocarbon valve, oxygen sensor readings… all these settings have to work to certain parameters to make your Ducati perform.

Our workshop uses factory Ducati Mathesis and universal TEXA and Launch diagnostics control systems to assist with fault diagnosis. Each system offers unique features and benefits, making them better suited for specific bikes or problems. Having several systems available in-house means we can usually pinpoint a problem and fix it quickly and efficiently for the customer.

Reprogramming the ECU is vitally important so that we can correct the fuel mapping on troublesome bikes. Our in-house facilities and dyno (run by our partner CJS) allows us to change the fuelling of individual cylinders throughout the rev range to obtain optimum combustion and performance. Where necessary a replacement ECU may be required and these can usually be found in stock in our extensive parts store where we have a good supply of almost everything!

Most diagnostic analysis nowadays is fuel-related, with motorcycles running poorly or cutting out. The introduction of ethanol to petrol and its increasing percentage has meant that plastic, rubber and composite components in our fuel systems are being eroded away by the ethanol. This affects carburettors, fuel-injected systems, fuel lines and petrol tanks, meaning that leaks can occur, debris can block pipes, parts can deform and fuel pressure can be compromised, resulting in a poor running and sometimes unsafe bike.

‘They don’t make them like they used to’… of course, we are talking about batteries! The quality of modern battery manufacturing is more miss than hit and unfortunately this applies to the associated electrical components too. Modern Ducatis are highly voltage sensitive and do not cope well with weak or low cold crank amperage batteries. Other electrical problems can be caused by corroded wires and poor earthing due to bikes being ridden on salted roads in winter.

The points above are just the tip of the iceberg. What truly sets Louigi Moto apart is knowing precisely where to begin when a bike first arrives.
